Kyle Larson explains crash with teammate Hunt Elliott in Wise Power 400: 'An honest mistake'
Reigning Cup Series champion Kyle Larson collected his first win of the 2022 season on Lord's day in the Wise Power 400, merely it was not without its controversy.
With just nether 20 laps to go at the Machine Club Speedway, Larson was battling with Joey Logano when Larson'south Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Chase Elliott, came riding upward the outside. Larson chop-chop veered to his right and hit Elliott, sending his teammate into the wall and knocking him out of contention. Later in the race, Elliott spun out to cause a caution with just a few laps remaining that halted Larson's momentum.

Larson was passed briefly by Daniel Suarez after the race resumed with four laps to go, but Larson took the lead again and held off Austin Dillon to win the race.
Subsequently the race, Larson explained to the media that Logano was holding onto the bottom part of the track and the 2 were side-drafting, and that Larson did non expect in his mirror as he was trying to cut wide because he was too worried virtually Logano.
"I had a run so I went to pare off and every bit soon as I peeled off, my spotter'southward yelling, 'Outside, outside, outside.' And I had no inkling [Elliott] was even coming," Larson said. Larson said that had he been enlightened that Elliott was coming up along the side, he would not take been side-drafting Logano as much and would have tried to focus more on protecting his teammate and less on trying to pass Logano.
"It just it happened and I hate that it did," Larson said. "I know that they're upset, merely we'll talk and hopefully we'll get on the same folio. I would never encounter my teammate or block him that aggressively — and that tardily — on purpose."
According to Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass, Elliott did non have much to say nigh the incident, only that his spin-out was non intentional and that information technology was the event of a cleaved toe link.

Elliott had made an improbable comeback in the race. He had led for part of the race, simply bumped into the wall early and eventually spun out, dropping him well out of contention for the top spots.
But Elliott worked his manner support to go into position to battle with Logano and Larson for the lead belatedly in Fortuna until the hit sent him into the wall. NASCAR reporter Dustin Albino reported that Elliott — in NSFW terms — said on his radio that "it broke again," all but certainly referring to the toe link.
"What the f— is he doing, human? It wasn't even shut," Elliott said, per Albino. "It's probably going to break once more before the finish of the race. But I don't actually give a due south— who is leading the race."

Hendrick Motorsports general manager Jeff Andrews said later on the race that he spoke with Elliott and explained that it was "certainly nothing intentional" by Larson and said the team volition discuss the situation farther in visitor meetings on Mon and Tuesday. He also said he didn't believe Elliott's spin-out was done out of frustration.

Larson added after the race that he hadn't spoken with Elliott, but that he was going to explain his side of what happened. He said he knows that Elliott will still be upset, but said he believes information technology'southward "probably a small bump in the road."
"I think if things happen worse in the future, then yes it gets out of paw, simply Hendrick Motorsports I don't recall will ever let it go to that indicate," Larson said, according to Pockrass. "And like I said, nosotros have enough respect for each other that I don't recollect it will go out of hand at all and we'll merely have a conversation and I'thousand sure it will be fine. Like I said, he's going to be upset, which he has a right to be, but I'll explain my side just like I explained it to you guys and he'll believe me or he won't."
